In many instances, resetting the loose vinyl tiles found in kitchens, hallways, bathrooms and other locations can extend the life of the flooring in your Muskoka property.
Various reasons can cause vinyl tiles to become unsecured:
- high foot traffic area on a soft or softening sub-floor
- insufficient glue application
- adhesive deterioration from many years of dirt getting underneath tile seams
- detergents and floor washing enabling grit, dirt and water to penetrate tile seams
A combination of these contributing factors are the most likely reason.
Recently, Lakeview North completed a small vinyl tile repair project to extend the lifespan of a kitchen floor. Although one tile had completely separated from the sub-floor (right at the standing spot in front of the kitchen sink), inspection revealed that many of the surrounding tiles were also in need of resetting.
The process was fairly straightforward:
- gently remove loose vinyl tiles to prevent splitting and damage
- clean the edges and bottom surface of each tile (remember the orientation/ original location)
- scrape and vacuum sub-floor to remove all dried/ deteriorated glues and dirt residue
- lightly wash surface areas with damp washcloth
- vacuum again to fully remove residue
- carefully apply a sufficient quantity of tile adhesive to floor and tile (follow instructions of adhesive product as different options have different application recommendations)
- place tiles in original location and ‘set in place’ with light weight and pressure
- add pressure to press down tiles with boards and weights
- let adhesive cure according to product instructions
In this example, once numerous tiles were separated from the sub-floor it was determined that this structural surface was a little soft and had been constructed with a 1/2″ plywood board. We would recommend using 3/4″ plywood for strength. Additionally the floor board edge/ seam crossed through the tile pattern. As these two boards changed shape over time the tiles lifted gradually.
Lakeview North pointed out these factors with our client, who was pleased to learn the cause of the problem and was satisfied with the repair method chosen. A more costly floor rebuild was not an option at this time.
